Wii Sports looks like fun

15 October 2006 8 Comments

The new console buying season is just around the corner and pre-ordering for the new Playstation and Nintendo system have started. I probably won’t buy either system (certainly not Playstation) at launch, I typically wait until the first price drop. But the more I read and see of the Wii line-up of games the more I am tempted.

Wii LogoI stumbled across Wii Sports on GameSpot which is a first-party game that will launch with the Wii. It seems Wii Sports goes along the line of classic first-party sports games Nintendo made back in the day - like Tennis, Golf, and others. Certainly, however, the Wii Sports package will make use of the gyro-controller and actually get you active in playing your games.

…and that’s cool.

I’m all about the active video games. It started with DDR and some simple stomping, but if I can get into a game with swinging and all other sorts of involved action, then I’m all for giving it a try. I think video games need these active games not only to show that not all games are about beating up bullys in the schoolyard with a 2×4, but also to show that active games are/can be fun.

Just looking at the screen shots of the game and the games in Wii Sports, bowling being one of them - I can only imagine how the controller will be used. And then there’s also Tennis, Baseball, and Golf. However, looking at the screen shots you might say “Well, those graphics suck!”

I will agree that they are not the most realistic graphics - not at all. They are very basic and very “friendly” but if the game ends up being as fun as I expect, then the graphics make little difference. The best, most fun games in the world don’t have great graphics. Nice graphics are icing, but only if the cake is made properly. I think Nintendo knows how to bake a cake, and the cake will be probably doesn’t need any icing to taste good.

But…just look at the new Legend of Zelda and you’ll see that Nintendo can do icing too.

Anyway…if I keep reading about more games like Wii Sports being available at launch, then a Wii might find it’s way under my Christmas tree this year…if I can even get one!

    Nintendo Wii… FTW!!!

Sony is in trouble, and the PS3 is only one piece of the puzzle there. I wouldn’t even consider buying one… but then again, history has shown that I’m not an avid gamer.

The blue ray drive is a gimick. Until the next gen DVD format war is over, it’s a moot point. Besides, not too many people have HDTV’s that can even display those disks at full resolution anyway.

The Wii on the other hand… I might just buy one! Nintendo is betting that amazing graphics aren’t everything, and that fun games will sell. I agree. Give me a game that I can pick up and play. I don’t care if it’s lifelike or not. I just want to be able to play it without spending hours mastering the controls first.

The only thing with the Wii Sports games is if they are as active and fun as I expect, then I’ll need a bigger TV and bigger room to play in.

Plus, if I’m standing - as the videos on the Wii.com web site might suggest - it would be much better to have the TV higher on the wall.

Once again it looks like I will bend my life around some silly video game. But at least it will get me moving!!

It’s sad and funny at the same time.

    How true, how true.

I’m looking forward to the Wii. I imagine we will buy one in the January/February timeframe.

The the price of iPod you can get the game station and a couple games.

If I do buy a wii, I’ll still use my iPod more.

I don’t think there is a single day that I don’t use it at some point.

I only use my iPod at work, and just to get music from home to work. A Wii would certainly get more a workout than a iPod on my side of the tracks.

Out of the new round of systems the Wii looks to be the “newest”. The xbox and the ps3 will just be shoving more of the same down the pipes. Yeah, they are more powerfull than the last generation but they are computers with a OS that won’t let you do anything but play games. Shiney graphics do not a good game make. Nintendo is actually stepping out of the “power” contest and seem to be looking at pushing the concept of gaming outside of the box with pictures you control by pushing buttons. This will be the only new system I will buy. The PS3 and the xbox will have to wait till they are $20 at the used game shop.

Wii Sports IS fun. Spent a good six hours playing it on friday. At work even. The Wii has my vote for the “To Buy” Console.
