The movies women just don’t understand

Okay ladies, this one’s for you. If you’re woman then there’s probably a long list of movies you just don’t understand why us men enjoy. I can’t give any good reasons why us men like these movies, they probably strike some sort of primal chord with us or something. Nonethless, there are certain movies that are required viewing for men…and they should be for women.

The Three Stooges, perhaps the greatest mystery of all

The Three Stooges, perhaps the greatest mystery of all

The movies that made us

Why do women need to see these movies? First off, they’re good (bad) movies, second, you need to know them for their references. Since these movies are part of growing up for us boys, you should know where we come from. You might learn something. These movies molded us into the men we are today. Know the movies better, know us better.

But lets be honest, even afterwards you still won’t understand why we like these movies. You’re not going to suddenly like these movies. Just trust me that you’ll be a better person after you sit and honestly watch them. You only need to watch them once.

Oh and guys, I’m sure I’m missing some films, so please leave a comment and lets continue to build this list. And on the flip side, if anyone has good arguments against any of these films, please state your case.

Not just “Man Movies”

But let me make my intent clear. I’m not just trying to make a list of “Man Movies” or movies that men just like. I’m looking for the movies that confuse and annoy women. These are theĀ  movies guys can watch any place, any time, over and over. These are the movies us men incessantly quote (usually for their own amusement).

Movies men love and women don’t understand but need to watch anyway

(In no particular order)

  • Blues Brothers
  • Blazing Saddles
  • Three Stooges*
  • Predator
  • Game of Death
  • Mad Max (near or beyond Thunderdome)
  • Robocop
  • Happy Gilmore
  • Airplane
  • Aliens
  • Rocky IV
  • Any James Bond film prior to 1985
  • The Three Amigos
  • Animal House
  • Total Recall
  • Friday the 13th
  • Strange Brew
  • Caddyshack
  • Fletch

*The Three Stooges isn’t technically a movie. There are Three Stooges movies, but more so you just need to watch some of the classic Three Stooges shorts. I suggest starting with “Disorder in the Court”.

It doesn’t stop there…does it?

I’m not going to outline or highlight why these movies are in the list. If you want more detail, post your concerns in the comments. Some of these films could warrant an entire post discussing their importance, so I won’t start down that road here.

If nothing else this list is a good starting point. There’s some I’m forgetting and some I’m probably over-selling.

So ladies and gentlemen, what other movies should be on the list?
And which ones no not belong?

  1. +1 on Predator (check out the Blu Ray, amazing.) Since it’s the holiday season, I’ll throw out NL’s Christmas Vacation, already watched it twice.

  2. Yeah, I tossed around the Vacation movies but decided they were pretty universal at this point. Everyone can enjoy those movies, especially the Christmas one. But I do need to bust that out of the old DVD library soon.

I originally had Star Wars in the mix too but figured that’s way too universal at this point. The list was a lot longer at first.

  3. I just watched Strange Brew since I saw it on Matt’s Christmas list. It was… odd… but I didn’t mind it. I am not sure I would want to watch it again soon though!

Office Space wouldn’t be one I don’t think because as a lady, it is one of my favorites and applies to any office drone.

The Three Amigos and Airplane are classic! Those don’t annoy me! (Then again, I am no average gal! LOL)

The others.. yeah, you are right!

  4. I know I’m a bit late to this conversation… but I need to add that the one movie for ne that I really don’t think should be on this list is Blazing Saddles. For me it is this weird, beautiful gem of Jewish humor and not specifically “man humor”. Plus, I was the one who showed this movie to my husband and not the other way around.

I also really liked Caddyshack growing up. Haven’t seen it since I was about 14, but I recall liking it… and even attempting to do impressions of Bill Murray.

The only other one I can think of that doesn’t belong is the Blue’s Brothers, that’s a pretty universal movie.

Everything else is pretty spot on.
