By this time I had harnessed the power of the computer and understood a little bit how it worked and where things went. I remeber it distinctly, the arguements between me and my father about putting things on the hard drive. I simply showed him that the hard drive is for storing data. He understood, but still insisted on using the almighty floppy disk as storage. He had a point on many levels, but unfortunately games just didn't run off floppy disks. I'm sure my bickering helped get the first upgrade, but the parental units obviously saw they needed it as well, because I know my playing Sim City wasn't worth $700.
It's Time for an Upgrade
After a short 2-years we apparently out-grew the technology we had. It's now 1994 and ya know all these games (Sim City) take up a lot of hard drive space.
Hmmm...No Mr. Zelinsk. This must be his brother.
The worst blow here is the hard drive. One 540Mb, that's only a half-gig, cost $350!! For comparison, a 40Gb (540x80) hard drive today costs, oh, about $75. Looking right now, not even 160Gb (540x320) hard drives cost $350! Of course, we still didn't have a CD-ROM, meaning most things were shipped on floppies, so most programs were 3Mb to install.
Look out Information Super Highway!! We're comin'!! With our new 14.4 modem I could cruise FreeNet and most BBS's like it was no one's business.
But once again, some things never change. Labor is still outrageous and in some cases half of the cost of the upgrade.
Now we were cooking with gas! More RAM, more hard drive and to top it off, a modem! The parents saw the modem more as a fax machine at the time, but I saw it as freedom beyond my own local resources to get more games, icons and screen savers. They had no idea.
