      Dyson: Urban Myth?

Well I am here to tell you that Dysons live up to their hype. After reluctantly dropping my money on what might be a white elephant (of course if it was I was going to take advantage of best buy’s 30 day return/trial) and giving it a trial run I was amazed at what this machine can do. Now I know your thinking “how can a vacuum cleaner be amazing?”. Well here is a scenario for you. Imagine your current vacuum. Most people have moved to a bagless but there are a few bag users out there. After a thorough vacuuming with such a vacuum you might expect to empty the canister or bag once. Well go over the same area with a dyson. You will empty the canister at least 4-5 times per room. More if the carpet has been there awhile. Think of this as the Tim Allen of vacuums.

The amazing level of suction this appliance produces is due to the fact that it uses centrifugal force. Basically it is a mini tornado inside a plastic container. It will not loose suction even after three dogs worth of hair. It’s kind of like watching the two liter bottle water tornados.

The design of the vacuum is well thought out. All of the bends have access points for easy decloging. Emptying the canister requires two button pushes and no direct contact with the contents. It drops directly into the trash receptacle. Add in the well thought out attachments and hose extension you have a winner.

Overall I have to highly recommend a Dyson to anyone. The price might seem a little high but when you figure in the fact that it picks up two hundred times the debris than any other vacuum out there it’s worth it. Even the low end Dyson will put a high end anything else to shame.

I dream of getting a Dyson. I even registered for one of our wedding, knowing that I won’t get one. Maybe I’ll buy a low-end one.

We’re in need of a new vacuum, so with your report I am more convinced to get one. I too was worrisome of the white elephant factor.

We’re still using a hand-me-down bag sweeper and it is on its last legs, and the cat hates it.

The Dyson might be nice, but there is not alot out there worth $500, let alone a vacuum. You’d have A LOT of convincing to do to get me too believe that.

The avg. vacuum is $100-$150, so this one is 3 to 5 times more. Just for comparison here’s what we did: we have a nice $100 vacuum and we purchased a $180 deep cleaner (typically called a steam vac). So for $280 we have more cleaning power than a Dyson. Because no matter how powerful the Dyson is, a Deep Cleaner will get out more.

With the left over money ($220) we could puchase a 25″ TV or a flat panel monitor for our computer or make a car payment or go out to dinner 11 times or….

When I was looking at the Dyson, I came across this
        “Bagless.
In professional testing, the Dyson DC14 doesn’t outperform the cheaper Eureka or Kenmore models above. Although experts agree that the Dyson, which has won several design awards, is great looking and gets terrific suction and airflow, it still underperforms less expensive models on carpet. The seventeen-pound DC14 Animal includes a powered hand tool for digging pet hair out of upholstery and stairs. If you love gadgets and snazzy design, then the Dyson may be for you. Otherwise, the other models in Fast Answers clean as well for less. ”
Whether this holds true I can’t say, but the Dyson seems more like a FAD, than a deal, at it’s unreal 400% premium.

        IMO

My father used to have the 8-pound Oreck XL (the one that could pick up a bowling ball). It was a pretty good vaccuum.

I’m trying to convince Christina that after we get married that we’re getting one of those robot vacs.

I, too, will need to be convinced. I think that they work really well but I’m a cheap bastard.

        I am a believer!

With some free wedding cash we caved in and got the “low-end” Dyson. We needed a vacuum anyway because our handmedown bailed about a month ago.

It looks like the Ghostbuster’s sweeper. You pull off parts and have handy-yet-hidden extension hoses. And it’s yellow - so it’s extreme!

But the first field test was amazing. In fact, it was disgusting. One pass over our living room and I’d say wee sucked up a whole other cat in fur alone.

It’s a little beefy to push around, but I love that I don’t have to set carpet height setting before I sweep. I can just start and it will adjust.

Hopefully the power of the Dyson will hold up over time. As always with a more complex system there are more parts, so I hope this isn’t where Dyson cut corners. I did notice it generates quite a bit of heat too, so I hope that doesn’t come around to bite me.

All in all, I’m sold on this one. And I figure if I can drop $300 for a lawn mower, then I can certainly drop $300 for a vacuum, especially considering a vacuum will get used every week or so all year round.

So when your vacuum bites the dust - ha ha - I would certainly suggest dropping a few extra bucks on a Dyson. You won’t be let down.

I think Dyson’s are especially great if you have pets. But even without pets it is a worthwhile investment. I could not believe all the dirt and hair and dust it picked up. If anyone wants to stop by our house for a demo just let me know :-)
