I’m sorry I missed the Miss Teen USA pageant

This is a clip of Miss Teen South Carolina Lauren Caitlin Upton, 18. She was asked the following question: Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?” Her response is priceless. Enjoy.

And just in case you missed some of that, here’s a convenient map of her topics. Click to enlarge.

If I was Miss Teen America, I’d by everyone maps and then everyone would now where the US is, especially those poor, stupid Asian children.

This is retarded…what does Miss Teen get these girls? Money for college…is that it? What else….nothing? As we were talking earlier, can you name 3 Miss anythings off the top of your head? Teen, USA, World…whatever??? No.

What’s the point. It’s a waste of time, a waste of money…a most it’s entertainment for smart people, who don’t watch TV and only catch the highlights on YouTube.

Mario Lopez’s face at the end is priceless. He’s got to be saying to himself, “Don’t laugh. Don’t laugh. Don’t laugh.”

Of course, I guess the pageant does give people like Lopez a job.

    7. lil from August 27th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

I just figured out what she is trying to say after playing the video several times: We need to continue to have lousy education here in the US so that other countries like iraq and south africa will have an easier time competing with us.

Lets all burn our maps for the benefit of global society.

And campaign for legislation to have google maps and google earth blocked for access from US internet users.

      WAY TO GO SOUTH CAROLINA!!

Wow, you condem other people but can’t even spell?

That would be “If I ‘WERE’ Miss Teen America, I’d ‘BUY’ everyone maps and then everyone would ‘KNOW’ where the US is,…..”

By the way there are alot of Miss’ this that or the other in the entertainment business and also doing well in other industries.

Consider this, Halle Berry, Gretchen Carlson, Oprah Winfrey, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Deborah Norville, Paula Zahn, Diane Sawyer are all pageant winners. Pageants are a thing to do, just like any other activity. Football and basketball and baseball are a wast of time too, but none the less alot of little boys grow in to grown men and keep playing it.

    13. Justin Trevor from August 28th, 2007 at 3:36 pm

As a show of support, we Canadians will also burn our own maps so that we can stand shoulder to shoulder with our American allies in not knowing where the F*k we are LOL

Congratulations South Carolina. You’ve done us all proud.

    14. Big G from August 28th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

Robin, are you a closet pageant winner?

You seem a little sensitive about this.

    15. Brian from August 28th, 2007 at 3:39 pm

Oooof…Miss South Carolina’s redo of the question isn’t much better than her first go at it. Some people just can’t win even when they try. Although the Today Show was nice to her to make her feel better. We don’t want any hurt feelings now.
      http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20053504,00.html

Sorry, Robin, but you’re going to lose that fight here. Plus, I’m not up on a stage trying to represent an entire state in what should be a dying tradition of Miss.* pageants.

And *pre-season* football did better in the TV ratings than the pageant, so I’d say people are a little more interested in football, although sometimes it is not nearly as entertaining.

    17. Jen from August 28th, 2007 at 6:54 pm

Robin: While there are many famous former pageant winners, most are not so lucky. I don’t think anyone is saying there is anything wrong with pageants. What is being said is that Miss South Carolina sounded like a twit on national TV. Pageants have a question and answer portion and she blew it. If the pageants are not about intelligence, fine but don’t force them to answer questions. And by the way, Robin, since we’re playing spell checker, the word is “a lot” not “alot” and it is “waste” not “wast”.

    18. Becky from August 28th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

BK… ah that is a good link… that is how I would have responded had I been there at the pageant.. of course, I would have had to stop laughing first!

If they would have asked her questions like “what brand of blue jeans are the most expensive and hug your tight little ass the best” or “which brand of make-up do you prefer and why” or ” what’s your favorite shampoo”? These are questions she could really talk about in depth.

    29. TheNut from August 29th, 2007 at 12:56 pm

Seems like the question destroyed all the electric connections in her 133 MHz brain, and when this happened, it generated this mumble jumble.

    32. Field Stomper from August 29th, 2007 at 2:32 pm

It seems to me that she has been struck by brilliancy even if she in unawares.
Even if she aced the question and won, what are the odds that anyone would remember her in a year or two?
Now, though, she has international fame (and she does add a new spin to international) and is most likely on her way to the start of an acting career.

      The next Coke commercial:
The camera shows her standing in front of a giant world map holding a can of Coke.
She smiles and begins: “Everywhere from South Africa (pointing at Mexico) to The Iraq (pointing at Mongolia), people enjoy the taste of Coke.
      The world’s First Tradition.”
Then the camera shows the set be taken down while she stands looking at the Hawaiian Islands, and she is overheard saying, “Wow! Minnesota does have a lot of lakes!”

Little girls are socialized to believe that their appearance is a highly important part of their development as human beings. Religion has its grubby little hands in the fashion/appearance clap trap too with its lunatic crooning about dressing modestly.

Given that its kinda not fair to expect the teen from South Carolina to be expected to answer off the cuff questions not related to the all about looks industry. In my opinion anyhow.

Her faux paus was funny for sure but what a bunch of vultures we are becoming, myself included.

Football and basketball and baseball are a wast of time too, but none the less alot of little boys grow in to grown men and keep playing it…”

If you’re going to be a critic of someone else’s spelling, maybe a self-spell check is in order? How many words is “alot”? That’s right, two. And what’s a “wast”? Maybe a grammar check to help you out would be in order as well. Pretty sure Miss isn’t plural possessive. Don’t “wast” our time either.

if she had been dumb, but with attitude:

Q: Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

A: It doesn’t matter if people are Polish or not. When they move here, they should learn our traditions. Drinking is a serious problem and a fifth is too much for most Americans. Most of my friends just drink 40s. Also, if anyone wants to see the U.S. on a map, they should just look at a U.S. map, not a world map. I mean, when I go to get my nails done, I don’t ask what colors they have if I want pink, just what kinds of pink they have. By the way, I, like most Americans, know where I am located. If someone doesn’t know where they are located, they might have amnesia and you should look in their wallet and call 911. Thank you.

    43. Jen from August 29th, 2007 at 7:20 pm

Well, Bongo, that’s kind of my point too, I think…everyone knows these pageants are not about intelligence but they keep the “thoughtful question” portion. As long as they keep doing that then these girls have to be expected to be made fun of for saying silly things. Beauty is temporary.

    44. Jen from August 29th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

It would have been much more honest to answer “I can’t find the US on a map”

    46. PauaPrincess from August 30th, 2007 at 7:58 am

Oh my, she would have been better on the second go if she’d quit talking at “more emphasis on geography”. Quite frankly, if you can’t locate your own country on a map of the world, it has very little to do with the ability to read maps and everything to do with a complete lack of geographical knowledge of the world and your place in it. But she’s pretty so its ok eh?

    47. tom from August 30th, 2007 at 11:48 am

I think she is a victim of this society - our education system.

    48. David R., NORTH Carolina from August 31st, 2007 at 3:50 am

Here’s what Miss Teen South Carolina meant to say, except she was too nervous from an overdose of diet pills before the pageant:

“Thank you for your question- though it is not at first blush a center-stage issue, I do feel that education and knowledge of the world are essential to informing the decisions made by American citizens in a functioning democracy. That’s why I have advocated increased funding for greater geographic training, lobbied the State department to include a world factbook with all new passports, and am currently tutoring at-risk children in the South Carolina low country on geographical knowledge of their ethnic roots. I would also like to point out that my opponents have not supported the multiple-solution approach that I have advocated.

But I digress- to answer your question, Aimee, I think that we have to look at more than one factor. Among them are lack of foreign travel by US Americans (as opposed to Latin Americans and Canadians), the Iraq war’s tendency to encourage isolationism, the new nativism, competition from the Asian countries damaging American self-confidence, and of course excessive media attention on entertainment- such as this event. However, my own experiences with study abroad in South Africa have given me optimism that we can do better, and that we will be able to build up geographical knowledge so that our future will be on of our own determination.”

    51. islandmonk from August 31st, 2007 at 7:24 pm

It wasn’t a fair question. The contestant could have said: what are these polls that you are brining up? Are you sure that they are trustworthy sources? I haven’t read these polls and so I shouldn’t remark on them.

    52. Bob In South Carolina from September 3rd, 2007 at 9:28 am

I moved to SC two years ago (Myrtle Beach) and can attest to the intelligence of the average youth here. The little girl in the contest was of average intelligence for this State.

She could probably quote the Bible page and verse but can’t find any place on a map. It’s not surprising to know that 2/3 of the natives of this State have never left it.

Brian, Your map is great, I’m going to print it out (with your permission) and staple it to all the power pole to help the locals.

I did, however, catch the recap / therapy session with Matt & Ann(e?) on the Today show. There really was no need to inform us that The Today show is owned by the same parent company that shares ownership with Trump of The Pageant. The high five after the lame “do over” pretty well covered that.

    55. Choong from September 9th, 2007 at 9:40 pm

Brian, would it be ok for me to redo your map in Illustrator for a CafePress shirt? I’m thinking all proceeds go to the National Geographic Society designated for the Education fund:

      http://www.nationalgeographic.com/donate/education.html

As they say, “In a recent survey, the United States finished next to last out of nine countries, and about 11 percent of young U.S. citizens couldn’t locate their country on a map.”

      -Choong

    56. Brian from September 11th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

That map on a shirt would be hilarious. Feel free to remake it as you need, all I ask is that you include “www.morningtoast.com” at the bottom like on the graphic.

(typos in last reponse) There is one thing though, her choking aside… I don’t believe the statement proposed in the question is really true. The 1/5 of Americans includes adults according to the question. I know there are some folks that get aborbed in their own hometown USA mind set, but that 20% is plain ridiculous. Where did they take this poll, in an institution? I know there was a survey a few years back where US teens could not find England. Still pretty dumb, but not quite the same. I remember one response being… England?? Is that in California? Pretty funny actually. (Or maybe there is an England, CA. (Like London, Ohio :) Ask 5 adults of various vocation that are acquaintences and see if they know where to find the lower 48? Come on, do you really think even one couldn’t do it…? The question is void. Alas, I’m glad she answered the way she did or I may never have encountered her exquisite beauty.

The logic you use in suggesting that religion and its promotion of modesty as having a negative effect on a woman’s view of herself is as mucked up as Miss South Carolina’s answer.

Find the women who complain they’re objectified, and those will typically be the women who dress immodestly.
